[What is the Japan Asian Association & Asian Friendship Society (JAFS)]

The Japan Asian Association & Asian Friendship Society (JAFS) was started to provide wells in the tropical Asian countries, where the most important thing to human life, clean drinking water, was seriously lacking.

We develop self-sustaining programs to increase mutual understanding, cooperation, and solidarity with the people of Asia. Our programs range from supplying drinking water (wells) to forest stations, increasing education to raising the living standards for the citizens of each country, and so forth.

In order to make our support programs more suitable and effective in each area that we work, we have 33 local offices in 16 Asian countries.

We sponser various kinds of activities in local Japanese communities to increase the awareness of the the situations in other Asian countries.

Our efforts, in regards to environmental issues, are addressed through the following programs:

 Asia International Forestry Training
Forest station officers in other Asian countries learn forest preservation technology in Japan.
 Soil, Water, and Green School
Held every summer vacation, this is an experimental program to increase awareness of
the importance of nature amoung children.

JAFS is a pioneer in NGOs in Japan and became an incorportated body in 1988 as the result of the awards for our international activities. There are about 4000 members registered currently.

We plan to continue to become more involved with activities for the solidarity of all citizens of Asia.
